THE HEARTBEAT

OF CUTTING

THE STORY OF OUR SPORT

Now, cutting is defined by a horse’s ability to separate (or ‘cut’) a cow from a small herd inside an arena. As the cow continues to try to get back to its herd, the rider ‘drops’ their hand to the horse’s neck and allows the steed to use its own intuition to keep the cow at bay – the horse’s athletic ability and competitive fervour on full display.

The competitor has two and a half minutes to work two or three cows in front of a panel of up to three adjudicators, who judge on style, control and ability.

The sport is beloved by a diverse range of devotees – from those who farm livestock, to genetic aficionados invested in the breeding programs and even supermodels who have propelled the Western lifestyle into the cultural zeitgeist through the ‘Yellowstone Effect’.

But no matter the reason for the devotion, there is a grounding and natural pull of cutting that pre-dates the digital world into something more soothing and wholesome. The bedrock of cutting will always be a profound love of the horse and a deep respect for the extraordinary craft of cutting training, where horse and rider develop their own language and ability to communicate, showcasing preternatural athleticism that proves just what is possible when training, talent and tenacity intersect.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

A LEGACY HARD BUILT

With more than 50-years leading Australia’s cutting industry, the NCHA believe in nurturing and advancing every member at every level – from the grassroots arenas dotted in small towns throughout the bush, to the stadium lights of the annual Futurity event and the richest indoor horse sport in the Southern Hemisphere. We believe in the greatness of Australian cutting horses, their breeders, trainers, and their riders. We believe in the connection, camaraderie, generosity, and spirit of our cutting community, and championing the horsemanship that underpins our sport. We believe in celebrating the mastery and artistry that comes from years of training. We know that champions aren’t just made in the arena – they’re made in the countless weeks leading up to stepping under the spotlight. The generations of breeding and the decades of knowledge and education that builds up to that moment. We believe that freedom and self-reliance is the blueprint upon which we build. We believe that greatness is achieved when collaboration is revered and the rising tide lifts all. We believe in the connection you feel when among likeminded passionate folks, and the common understanding that the horse’s wellbeing and confidence comes before all else. We want others to fall in love with cutting for the reasons we do – because it feels like home.
